Whether it is choosing to harvest or save Little Sisters in BioShock or choosing to be good or evil in the Fable series, ethical dilemmas are a large component of many modern games. However, the main implementation of these dilemmas has always been a series of binary choices, authored by the designer to handle each outcome. This talk will concentrate on how to move beyond binary choices and design actual systems that will allow for ethical gameplay throughout the game.
Learning Objectives
- Understand what role ethical dilemmas play in games and how they are implemented.
- Learn about what advantages systems provide to the medium and why designing systems that challenge the player’s ethics may be a better approach.
- Learn what is necessary to design an ethical system and how to approach the design of ethical systems in games.
