The Music of the Game without Music- The Audio of “Kane & Lynch2: Dog Days”

Presented by Mona MurComposer, Vocalist, Audio DesignerMona Mur

November 1st16:00 - 17:00Room : Jacques-Cartier

Audio track presented by Steinberg and Yamaha Canada Music.

The action title “Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days” (IO Interactive/EIDOS) features an original score of psychological ambient soundscapes instead of conventional in-game music. In 5 months, Mona generated over 100 minutes of abstract, disturbing and complex noise and ambient layers from unusual sources and with inherent beauty. The instruments are partly the industrial sounds of the city, recorded on-location and orchestrated to fit the emotional experience of the player. Like in the early movies of Martin Scorsese, “normal” music (Chinese pop songs) can only be heard from sources anchored to the scene (radios, elevators, restaurants and so on). If this works as expected, the audience will perceive this as a game without music, but with a strong sense of the mood in the environment.

Learning Objectives
- “Reality ambience 2.0″ silence is thrilling. Less can be more: an alternative audio and music concept for more immersive and mature gameplay experience.
- The art of noise, generating original “psychoactive” noise layers for games.
- Production & workflow, how to brief your external composer well.

About Mona Mur

MONA MUR, vocalist, composer and sound designer, has a background in the international avantgarde scene collaborating with artists such as "Einstürzenderzende Neubauten", "The Stranglers", "Yello" and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. Featuring a violently orchestral sound of darkest shades, her concerts in manic intensity and morbid slowbeat chic were foundation stones for her cult image until today. Her songs are to be found in movies such as Fatih Akin’s much acclaimed drama “Head On/Gegen die Wand”. In 2009 she released the CD “120 Tage – The Fine Art of Beauty & Violence” with EN ESCH (exKMFDM) on PALE MUSIC Int. and Artoffact Records Canada 2010. In 1999 Mona joined the Computer Games Industry as audio artist for software developer TERRATOLS. She created a unique style of eerie and haunting electronic music and Sound FX. Her work can be found in games such as BALLANCE (ATARI USA/Japan 2006), the 3rd person shooter VELVET ASSASSIN (Replaystudios/SouthPeak 2009/UBISOFT JAPAN 2009) or the action shooter "Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days"(EIDOS/SQUARE ENIX 201).
