Unreal University
Unreal University is an academic initiative sponsored by Epic Games and Autodesk to offer professional, hands-on guidance to those interested in using its award-winning Unreal Engine 3 (UE3) technology, including the Unreal Development Kit (UDK). Sessions are free, and topics include level design best practices, mobile game development tips and tricks, and more.

Creating a real time strategy game for Mobile
- This session covers how to create a real time strategy game using technology within UDK. This session is targeted towards programmers and game designers. Session speakers James Tan and Markus Arvidsson.
UDK Overview
- This session covers the toolsets within in UDK and provides an overview of their uses for making games. This session is targeted towards everyone. Session speakers James Tan and Markus Arvidsson.
Intro to Maya/Max & UDK
- In this session, Frank DeLise, senior product manager at Autodesk will walk you through using FBX in 3DS Max and Maya to get content into the UDK. From statics, custom collisions, materials and more.
Creating digital movies with Unreal Matinee
- This session covers the use of Unreal Matinee to create a short digital film. This session is targeted towards content developers. Session speakers James Tan and Markus Arvidsson.
Creating a racing game
- This session covers how to create a racing game using technology within UDK . This session is targeted towards everyone. Session speakers James Tan and Markus Arvidsson.
Advanced content creation ,“FBX pipeline for power users”
- In this session, Frank DeLise, senior product manager at Autodesk will walk you through the process of adding custom vehicles, characters and weapons into the UDK using 3ds max and Maya through FBX.
AAA graphics on Mobile
- This session covers tips and tricks that you can use to get AAA graphics on mobile platforms such as the iOS. This session is targeted towards everyone. Session speakers James Tan and Markus Arvidsson.
How to make a side-scrolling platform game with UDK
- This session will show attendees how to make a simple side-scrolling platform game for PC primarily using UnrealScript.
How to build a UDK Level in one hour
- This session will demonstrate how to quickly make a game level using the Unreal Editor.
Introduction to Unreal Editor
- This session covers how to get started with Unreal Editor to start creating levels. This session is targeted towards everyone. Session speakers James Tan and Markus Arvidsson.

Markus Arvidsson
Co-Founder, Teotl Studios
Markus Arvidsson is a co-founder and the lead programmer of the Swedish game development studio Teotl Studios. Teotl Studios first game, “The Ball”, was the first UDK based game to be commercially released. Markus has extensive experience with the Unreal Engine, both on the programming side and on the content creation side. In his role in Teotl Studios, he provided daily feedback to the other team members about technical issues and how to use the UDK tools. Markus has a Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Lund University.
James Tan
Game Developer, Epic Games
James Tan is a game developer who specializes in Unreal Engine. Having used Unreal Engine for the last 12 years, he believes that every game genre can be created in Unreal Engine. He has been involved in almost every field of game development such as animation, level design, technical art, 3D modeling, 2D texturing and programming. He is currently working for Epic Games as a documentation writer and other Unreal Engine based projects outside of Epic Games; such as the up and coming The Haunted: Hells Reach who were the winners of the last Make Something Unreal Contest. He previously worked as a programmer and technical artist on The Ball with Teotl Studios. He has a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from Otago University and occasionally practices as a pharmacist..
Lee Perry
Senior Gameplay Designer, Epic Games
Lee Perry has been an artist and designer in the game industry for 15 years. Lee is in his tenth year with Epic Games, where he pioneered the use of modular static meshes to create environments and advance beyond the age of BSP. Lee was also deeply involved with the development of the popular Unreal Kismet visual scripting system, and created the majority of the gameplay prototypes for each game in the blockbuster Gears of War franchise. Lee was an artist and designer on Unreal Tournament 2003 and Unreal Tournament 2004, lead level designer for Gears of War, and senior gameplay designer for Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3. Prior to joining Epic, Lee’s career included research and development with Square Soft, as well as art directing and lead level design for Ion Storm’s Anachronox.
Frank DeLise
Senior Product Manager, Games Technology Group, Autodesk
Frank Delise is a veteran video game designer with more than 17 years of experience as an artist, executive producer and founder of Kaos Studios. Frank started his career as an artist where he worked on several films including Lost in Space, Xmen and games including Desert Combat, Battlefield 2, Frontlines and Homefront. In the early 90’s Frank joined Autodesk to lead the design on 3ds max where he interacted with game developers, improving the process of making games.
